Mattress Sizes Chart and the Room Each Bed Needs

A person measures wall space above a bathroom vanity for a mirror.

Short answer

The six standard US mattresses are twin 38 x 75, twin XL 38 x 80, full 54 x 75, queen 60 x 80, king 76 x 80 and California king 72 x 84 inches (Sleep Foundation, Wayfair). To fit one comfortably, Sleep Foundation suggests about 24 inches of space on each side and at the foot. By that rule, a queen with walkways on both sides needs a floor area of about 9 ft x 8 ft 8 in before nightstands or a dresser (our arithmetic). Retailers' "minimum room" figures are larger: about 10 x 10 ft for a queen and 12 x 12 ft for a king (Casper; Wayfair says 11 x 10 for a queen).

Table note: mattress sizes are from Sleep Foundation and Wayfair. Casper lists the full at 53 x 75 inches, so check the exact product. The last column is the mattress plus 24 inches on the left, right and foot (Sleep Foundation's spacing); it doesn't include a headboard, the bed frame's extra inches, nightstands or a dresser, so treat it as the floor before furniture. Three rules for fitting a bed in a room

  • 24 inches around the bed. Sleep Foundation recommends about 24 inches on each side, and its queen guide adds the foot of the bed.
  • One-third of the floor. Wayfair suggests a 1:3 bed-to-room ratio: the bed takes up no more than a third of the floor. Sofas have a similar proportion rule, about two-thirds of the wall (sofa dimensions), and a vanity mirror should stay a little narrower than the counter.
  • The code floor. Under the 2021 International Residential Code (R304), a habitable room needs at least 70 square feet and must be at least 7 feet in every direction. So a code-built bedroom has at least 70 square feet; Casper's 7 x 9 ft twin minimum (63 sq ft) is below that (our arithmetic).

The one-third rule by bed size

MattressMattress areaRoom for a 1:3 ratio (our arithmetic)Example room that meets it
Twin19.8 sq ftAbout 59 sq ft70 sq ft code minimum already covers it
Twin XL21.1 sq ftAbout 63 sq ftSame
Full28.1 sq ftAbout 84 sq ft9 x 10 ft (90 sq ft)
Queen33.3 sq ft100 sq ft10 x 10 ft
King42.2 sq ftAbout 127 sq ft11 x 12 ft (132 sq ft)
California king42.0 sq ft126 sq ft11 x 12 ft (132 sq ft)

What this means: the ratio rule lands close to Casper's figures for a queen (10 x 10) and a little under both retailers' 12 x 12 for a king. Shape matters as much as area: a long, narrow room can pass the ratio and still leave no walkway on one side.

How to measure your bedroom for a bed

  1. Measure the wall the headboard will go on, corner to corner or to the nearest door or window.
  2. Measure from that wall to the opposite wall.
  3. Mark doors, closets and windows, including the swing of each door.
  4. Subtract the bed: wall width minus mattress width, divided by two, is the walkway on each side. Aim for 24 inches (Sleep Foundation). It's the same edge-to-wall arithmetic our dining table and living room rug guides use.
  5. Subtract the length plus a few inches for the headboard, then check the space at the foot: 24 inches for a walkway, more if a dresser goes there.
  6. Use the frame size, not the mattress size. Sleep Foundation's king guide points out that the frame takes up space too; frames are often larger than the mattress, so read the frame's listed dimensions.
  7. Check the delivery route for the mattress, box spring and frame. The couch-and-door check works for headboards and frames too.

Example: queen or king in a 10 x 11 ft room

The room is 10 ft (120 in.) on the headboard wall and 11 ft (132 in.) the other way. The headboard adds 3 in. and the dresser is 18 in. deep (example furniture).

  • Queen, 60 x 80, on the 120-inch wall: (120 − 60) ÷ 2 = 30 in. each side. Length: 132 − 3 − 80 = 49 in. at the foot, enough for the 18-inch dresser plus 31 in. to walk past it. Floor share: 33.3 ÷ 110 sq ft = 30%, under Wayfair's one-third.
  • King, 76 x 80, on the 120-inch wall: (120 − 76) ÷ 2 = 22 in. each side, 2 in. under Sleep Foundation's 24. Floor share: 42.2 ÷ 110 = 38%, over one-third.
  • King turned to the 132-inch wall: 28 in. each side, but 120 − 3 − 80 = 37 in. at the foot, so the dresser plus a 24-inch walkway (42 in.) no longer fits.

Verdict: a queen fits this room with walkways and a dresser. A king squeezes in, but below every rule above. Casper and Wayfair both put a king in a 12 x 12 ft room. All arithmetic is ours; the furniture is an example, not a specific product.

Common questions

What is the most bought mattress size?

The queen. Sleep Foundation calls it the most common size, Wayfair calls it by far the most popular, and Casper says it accounts for the majority of US mattress sales.

Is a full two twins?

No. A full is 54 inches wide; two twins side by side are 76 x 75 inches (our arithmetic), as wide as a king but 5 inches shorter. Two twin XLs make the same 76 x 80 inches as a king, which Casper notes is how a split king is built.

Can a queen bed fit in a 10x10 room?

Yes. Casper lists 10 x 10 ft as the queen minimum, and Wayfair says a 10 x 10 room can take a full or a queen. Centered on a 10-foot wall, a queen leaves 30 inches each side and 40 inches at the foot (our arithmetic). Wayfair's own minimum table says 10 x 11, so a dresser may be tight.

Can a king bed fit in a 10x12 room?

It fits, but it's below the guidance. On the 12-foot wall, a king leaves 34 inches each side and 40 inches at the foot (our arithmetic). Casper and Wayfair both list 12 x 12 ft as the minimum, and the bed would take 35% of a 120-square-foot room, over Wayfair's one-third.

How much space should be around a bed?

About 24 inches on each side and at the foot, per Sleep Foundation. On a bed pushed against a wall, you only need it on the open side and the foot.

What's the difference between a king and a California king?

A king is 76 x 80 inches; a California king is 72 x 84, so 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer (Sleep Foundation, Casper). Casper puts their surface areas within a fraction of a square foot of each other.

Before you order a bed

Six checks before you buy:

  • Wall width minus the frame width leaves about 24 inches each open side.
  • Space at the foot covers 24 inches of walkway plus any dresser.
  • Door swings and closet doors clear the bed and nightstands.
  • Bed area is no more than a third of the floor, if you want Wayfair's proportion.
  • Frame dimensions read, not just the mattress size.
  • Doors, halls and stairs measured for the mattress and frame boxes.
