Home & Decor

How big, how high, will it fit? Measurement-led guides for mirrors, furniture and decor in real US rooms.

A person measures wall space above a bathroom vanity for a mirror.

Most decor mistakes aren't about taste. They're about inches: a mirror that's wider than the vanity, a sofa that's perfect in the showroom and stuck at the front door. The guides in this section start with the measurement that decides the outcome, then explain the rule of thumb behind it and where that rule comes from. When two sources disagree, we show both and do the math so you can choose. You won't find mood boards or "10 ideas" lists here. You'll find what to measure, where to hold the tape, and a clear note on who should skip a piece altogether. Grab a tape measure and a pencil before you start.

Before any home & decor purchase

Measure the path, not just the spot

The room may fit; the hallway may not.

Write numbers down in inches

US listings and delivery teams work in inches; 1 inch = 2.54 cm.

Include what sticks out

Door stops, trim, handrails and faucets all change the usable space.

Common questions

How wide should a mirror be compared with the vanity?

Narrower than the vanity, never wider. Wayfair's guide puts the mirror 2 to 4 inches in from each edge, so a 36-inch vanity takes a 28- to 32-inch mirror. The mirror guide has the chart for 24- to 72-inch vanities.

Do I measure the door frame or the opening?

The opening. Open the door all the way and measure between the door stops, because the stops and the door itself take up space. Our couch guide walks through each opening on the route.

Should I measure in inches or centimeters?

Inches. US listings and delivery teams use them. If your tape is metric, divide centimeters by 2.54.
