Lighting

Solar or wired, bollard or wall light: six lights from French shop Lumihome, chosen for homes in France, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Portugal.

A solar bollard lighting the edge of a garden path.

Outdoor lighting in Europe has one awkward fact: the further north you live, the less a solar light can do between November and February. These guides start from the job (a short path, a long driveway, a shed door, a pool deck, a dark staircase) and tell you when solar is enough and when you need a cable. Every light here is sold by Lumihome, a French lighting shop that delivers to seven EU countries only.

Guides in Lighting

Three questions before you buy

Must it light every night, all winter?

Then wire it, like the Pyramide 1500. Solar lights in northern Europe get a sixth of their summer energy in December.

Does the spot get midday sun in winter?

A north wall or a hedge-lined path will starve any solar panel. Check the shadow in November, not July.

How wet does it get?

IP44 shrugs off rain, IP65 handles hose and sprinkler jets, and nothing in this list is meant to sit under water.
