What Size Dining Table Seats 6?

Short answer
A rectangular table 60 to 72 inches long seats six, per West Elm, and a round table of about 54 to 60 inches does the same. Then leave at least 36 inches from the table edge to the wall on every side so chairs can pull out. West Elm, Wayfair and the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) all start at 36 inches; NKBA asks for 44 inches where people need to walk behind seated diners. A 60 x 36 in. table therefore needs a dining area of at least 11 x 9 ft (our arithmetic).
The spacing rules behind every size
- Elbow room per person: 24 to 26 inches of table edge (Wayfair). West Elm says about 2 feet per person at a rectangular table.
- Knee space: NKBA's guideline 9, written for kitchen seating areas, allows 24 inches wide by 18 inches deep for each diner at a 30-inch-high table.
- Table width: no more than 48 inches if you want to pass food across, and as narrow as 30 inches if serving dishes go on a sideboard (Wayfair).
- Clearance to walls: 36 to 44 inches (West Elm), 36 to 48 inches (Wayfair). NKBA: 32 inches if no one passes behind, 36 inches to edge past, 44 inches to walk past.
- Doorways and buffets: Wayfair recommends at least 48 inches between the table and a doorway. West Elm allows 54 to 62 inches on a side with a buffet.

Table sizes for 6 and the room each needs
| Table for 6 | Who recommends it | Room with 36 in. on every side | Room with 44 in. on every side |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rectangle 60 x 36 in. | West Elm: 60–72 in. long seats 6 | 11 ft x 9 ft | 12 ft 4 in. x 10 ft 4 in. |
| Rectangle 72 x 40 in. | West Elm: 60–72 in. long seats 6 | 12 ft x 9 ft 4 in. | 13 ft 4 in. x 10 ft 8 in. |
| Round 54 in. | Wayfair: 44–54 in. seats 5 to 7 | 10 ft 6 in. square | 11 ft 10 in. square |
| Round 60 in. | West Elm: 60 in. seats 6 to 8 | 11 ft square | 12 ft 4 in. square |
Table note: the room columns are our arithmetic: table length or diameter plus twice the clearance. The 36-inch column uses the minimum shared by West Elm, Wayfair and NKBA; the 44-inch column uses NKBA's walk-past figure. The widths of 36 and 40 inches are examples: 36 inches is the narrowest width that gives two facing diners NKBA's 18 inches of knee depth each (2 x 18 = 36, our arithmetic), and Wayfair's 48 inches is the upper limit for passing food.
How six people fit: rectangle vs. round
| Rectangle, 60–72 in. | Round, 54–60 in. | |
|---|---|---|
| Seating plan | 2 per side, 1 at each end | 6 around the edge |
| Edge per person | 60 in. ÷ 2 = 30 in. per side seat; 72 in. ÷ 2 = 36 in. | 54 in.: 170 in. around ÷ 6 = about 28 in.; 60 in.: 188 in. ÷ 6 = about 31 in. |
| Against Wayfair's spacing | Clears 24–26 in. per person at either length | Wayfair's round guide: 24–27 in. per seat for everyday meals, 30–33 in. for formal dining. 54 in. is everyday spacing; 60 in. reaches formal |
| Watch out for | Corner legs can take a few inches from each end seat (Wayfair) | Wayfair says round tables fit one or two extra seats; pedestal bases give more legroom |
| Fits rooms that are | Longer than they are wide (our reading of the seating plan) | Square, per Wayfair; small, per West Elm |
The per-person figures are our arithmetic (circumference = 3.14 x diameter, measured at the table edge).
How to measure your dining area
- Measure the dining zone wall to wall, or to the nearest obstruction: a sideboard, kitchen island or the back of a sofa. It's the same wall-to-wall habit our other guides use for a bed or curtains.
- Subtract the clearance. Take 72 inches (36 per side) off each dimension, or 88 inches (44 per side) where people will walk behind diners. What's left is the largest table footprint.
- Mark doorways. If a door opens onto the dining area, keep 48 inches between the table and the doorway, per Wayfair.
- Check the table width against your serving style. Up to 48 inches if dishes go in the middle; 30 to 36 inches can work if food stays on a sideboard (Wayfair's 30-inch floor, NKBA's knee depth).
- Check the chairs. Standard tables are about 30 inches high (West Elm, Wayfair), and dining chair seats are usually 18 to 19 inches (West Elm). Wayfair says to leave 10 to 12 inches between the seat and the underside of the table, and to measure armchairs against the apron.
- Tape the table and chair outline on the floor and pull a real chair out to sitting distance before you order. Our rug guide uses the same painter's-tape test.
Example: an 11 x 13 ft dining room with a door on one end
The room is 11 x 13 ft (132 x 156 in.). A doorway sits on one of the 11-foot walls.
- 72 x 40 in. table, centered: 156 − 72 = 84, so 42 in. at each end. 132 − 40 = 92, so 46 in. on each side. Both clear 36 in., and the sides clear NKBA's 44-inch walk-past figure.
- The doorway: 42 in. is short of Wayfair's 48 in. Slide the table 6 in. away from the door: 48 in. at the door end, 36 in. at the far end. That still meets the 36-inch minimum.
- 60 x 36 in. table: 48 in. at each end and 48 in. on each side, with no shifting needed.
- 60 in. round: 36 in. on the sides and 48 in. at the ends. Fine for dining, but tight to walk past a seated diner on the sides.
- Rug under the 72 x 40 table: Wayfair wants 24 to 30 in. past the table; West Elm says at least 36 in. An 8x10 (96 x 120 in.) gives 24 in. at the ends and 28 in. on the sides, which meets Wayfair. Meeting West Elm's 36 in. takes 144 x 112 in., so a 9x12, which gives 36 and 34 in.
Verdict: all three tables fit; the 72-inch table needs a nudge away from the door. The arithmetic is ours; the room is an example. We cover sizes here, not specific tables.
Which table suits your space
| A rectangle suits you if… | A round table suits you if… |
|---|---|
| The room is longer than it is wide, so the table's length runs with the room | The room is square or small; West Elm and Wayfair both point round tables there |
| You sometimes seat 8: West Elm puts 8 at 80–87 in., and extension leaves add length | You usually seat 4 to 6 and want one conversation (West Elm: round tables "foster conversation") |
| You want a bench along one side (West Elm says benches tuck under) | You want a pedestal base and no corner legs |
| You serve food from a sideboard and can go narrow | It goes in a breakfast nook or apartment dining corner (Wayfair) |
Common questions
Can a 60-inch table fit 6 chairs?
Yes, for a rectangle: two chairs per side and one at each end. At Wayfair's 24 to 26 inches per person, two side chairs take 48 to 52 inches of the 60, leaving room between them; West Elm lists 60 to 72 inches for six. A 60-inch round seats six to eight per West Elm, which works out to about 31 inches of edge per person for six (our arithmetic). Check the leg position: Wayfair warns that table legs can take a few inches from each side.
What is the typical size of a 6-seater dining table?
Rectangles run 60 to 72 inches long (West Elm). Rounds run about 54 to 60 inches: Wayfair puts 44 to 54 inches at five to seven people, and West Elm puts 60 inches at six to eight.
How wide should a dining table for 6 be?
At least 36 inches gives two facing diners NKBA's 18 inches of knee depth each (our arithmetic). Wayfair says up to 48 inches still lets people pass dishes across.
How much room do I need for a table for 6?
Add 72 inches (36 inches per side) to the table's length and width. For a 60 x 36 in. table that's an 11 x 9 ft area; plan on 44 inches per side where people walk behind chairs (NKBA), and 48 inches at a doorway (Wayfair). If your room is an odd shape, email us the measurements, or search our guides for the other furniture in it.
Is a 72-inch table big enough for 8?
Only tightly. At 24 inches per person, three chairs per side fill all 72 inches with nothing to spare (our arithmetic), and Wayfair also wants about 6 inches between chairs. West Elm lists 80 to 87 inches for eight.
Before you order
Six checks before you buy:
- Dining area measured wall to wall, minus 36 to 44 inches per side.
- 48 inches kept clear at any doorway; 54 to 62 inches on a side with a buffet.
- Leg or pedestal position checked against the end seats.
- Chair seat height leaves 10 to 12 inches under the table apron.
- If you'll add a rug, it reaches 24 to 36 inches past the table so pulled-out chairs stay on it.
- Delivery route measured: a 72-inch tabletop has to get through your doors too, and the couch-and-door check works for a tabletop.
