What Size Rug for a Living Room?

Short answer
For most living rooms the choice is between an 8x10 and a 9x12. Wayfair puts 8x10 in medium living rooms and 9x12 in large ones. Two numbers decide which: leave 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls (Crate & Barrel and Rugs USA both give this range), and make the rug reach 6 to 8 inches past each arm of the sofa (Rugs USA; Wayfair says at least 6 inches). If the bigger rug still clears the walls by 12 inches, it isn't too big.
The three numbers to measure
- Room width and length, wall to wall. Subtract 24 to 36 inches from each (12 to 18 inches per side) to get the largest rug that leaves a border.
- Sofa length, arm to arm. Add 12 to 16 inches (6 to 8 inches per side) to get the shortest rug side that frames it. Typical lengths are in our sofa dimensions guide.
- Wall to the sofa's front legs. The rug edge has to land behind this line if you want the front legs on the rug.
Every Home & Decor guide starts from numbers like these, and the full guide list covers dining rooms, bedrooms and doors too.
Rug size chart by room and sofa
| Rug size (ft) | In inches | Smallest room with a 12 in. border | Room with an 18 in. border | Longest sofa it frames at 6–8 in. per side | What retailers use it for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5x8 | 60 x 96 | 7 x 10 ft | 8 x 11 ft | 80–84 in. | Crate & Barrel: under accent chairs or a loveseat |
| 6x9 | 72 x 108 | 8 x 11 ft | 9 x 12 ft | 92–96 in. | Crate & Barrel: small living room; Wayfair: most small living rooms (with 5x7) |
| 8x10 | 96 x 120 | 10 x 12 ft | 11 x 13 ft | 104–108 in. | Wayfair: medium living rooms; Crate & Barrel: medium room, front legs on the rug |
| 9x12 | 108 x 144 | 11 x 14 ft | 12 x 15 ft | 128–132 in. | Wayfair: large living rooms; Crate & Barrel: most sofa-plus-chairs layouts or a sectional |
| 10x14 | 120 x 168 | 12 x 16 ft | 13 x 17 ft | 152–156 in. | Crate & Barrel: anchors a full seating area |
Table note: the room and sofa columns are our arithmetic. Room size = rug size plus 12 inches (or 18 inches) of floor on every side, per the Crate & Barrel and Rugs USA range. Sofa length = the rug's long side minus 6 to 8 inches on each end, per Rugs USA, with the sofa running along that side. Rooms are rounded up to the next foot.
Where the furniture legs go
| Layout | What sits on the rug | Wayfair says it suits | Rug size it usually takes |
|---|---|---|---|
| All legs on the rug | Sofa, chairs and tables, all four legs | Open-concept rooms, or a seating group that floats away from the walls | The largest: often 9x12 or bigger |
| Front legs on the rug | The front legs of every seat; back legs on the floor | Rooms where one side of the seating is against a wall | 8x10 in a medium room (Crate & Barrel) |
| Only the coffee table on the rug | The coffee table; all seating off the rug | Small or narrow rooms | Sized to the open space inside the seating group, not to the coffee table |
Rugs USA and Crate & Barrel both say to fit at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug. Rugs USA suggests all four feet when the room is big enough. Wayfair's coffee-table-only layout is the exception for small rooms, and Wayfair says to size that rug to the inside of the seating group so it fills the open space.
How to measure for a living room rug
- Set the furniture first. Rugs USA's first step is to finalize the layout. A rug sized for a sofa that later moves will be wrong. If the sofa hasn't arrived yet, check that it will fit through the door first.
- Choose the layout from the table above: all legs, front legs or coffee table only.
- Measure the room or the zone. Wayfair says you can measure the whole room or just the seating area. In an open plan that runs into a dining area or kitchen, measure just the seating zone. Use a steel tape for long runs; it's the same tape you'll want for a bed or curtains.
- Measure the sofa arm to arm and add 12 to 16 inches. The rug side parallel to the sofa should be at least that long.
- Measure from the wall to the sofa's front legs. If the rug will sit 12 to 18 inches off that wall, check that the front legs land on it.
- Tape the outline on the floor with painter's tape at the size you're considering. Rugs USA and Wayfair both suggest this, and it shows whether walkways and doors stay clear.
- Size the pad: Wayfair and Crate & Barrel both say about 1 inch smaller than the rug on every side, so an 8x10 rug takes a pad about 7 ft 10 in. by 9 ft 10 in. (Wayfair's example is 4 ft 10 in. by 7 ft 10 in. for a 5x8.)
Example: 8x10 or 9x12 in a 13 x 16 ft room
The room is 13 x 16 ft (156 x 192 in.). The sofa is 84 in. long and sits against the long wall. Its front legs are 34 in. from the wall (measure yours).
- Largest rug with a 12–18 in. border: 156 − 24 to 36 = 120 to 132 in. wide; 192 − 24 to 36 = 156 to 168 in. long. That's up to about 10 x 13 ft.
- 9x12 (108 x 144 in.): leaves 24 in. of floor on each side, a little more than the 12–18 in. range. It fits.
- 8x10 (96 x 120 in.): leaves 30 in. on the short sides and 36 in. on the long sides. Roughly double the 12–18 in. range; the rug will look small in this room.
- Sofa check: both rugs are longer than 84 + 16 = 100 in. on their long side, so either frames the sofa.
- Front legs: with the 9x12 centered, its edge is 24 in. from the wall, so the front legs (34 in. out) sit 10 in. onto the rug. With the 8x10 turned the same way, its edge is 30 in. out and the legs get only 4 in.
Verdict: the 9x12 is the better fit for this room. The arithmetic is ours; the room and sofa are an example. Like all our guides, this one covers sizes, not specific listings.
Which size suits your room
| An 8x10 suits you if… | A 9x12 suits you if… |
|---|---|
| The room is about 10 x 12 to 11 x 13 ft | The room is about 11 x 14 ft or larger |
| The sofa is up to about 104–108 in. long | The sofa is longer, or it's a sectional |
| You want only the front legs on the rug | You want a sofa plus two chairs on the rug (Crate & Barrel) |
| A walkway or door swing runs close to the seating | The seating floats in an open-plan room |
Between two sizes, Wayfair says to choose the larger one, and Crate & Barrel's advice is the same: "when in doubt, size up." Check the border first, though: if the larger rug leaves less than 12 inches of floor, step down. If your room falls between rows, email us the room and sofa measurements, or search our guides for the furniture going on the rug.
Common questions
Is an 8x10 rug too big for a living room?
Not if the room leaves at least 12 inches of floor around it. By our arithmetic that's a room of about 10 x 12 ft or larger (96 + 24 in. by 120 + 24 in.). In a room under that size, a 6x9 or a coffee-table-only layout fits better. Wayfair calls 8x10 the medium-living-room size.
Is a 9x12 rug too big for a living room?
It needs about 11 x 14 ft for a 12-inch border, or 12 x 15 ft for 18 inches (our arithmetic from the Crate & Barrel and Rugs USA range). In a smaller room the rug runs nearly wall to wall. Wayfair recommends 9x12 for large living rooms.
What is the perfect rug size for a living room?
There's no single size, but 8x10 is the most popular, according to Rugs USA, and most living rooms land on 8x10 or 9x12. Pick the larger one that still leaves 12 to 18 inches of floor on every side and reaches 6 to 8 inches past the sofa arms.
Should the sofa legs be on the rug?
At least the front legs, per Rugs USA, Crate & Barrel and Wayfair. All four legs work in large or open rooms. In a small room, Wayfair's alternative is to keep all seating off and put only the coffee table on the rug.
Should the rug be wider than the sofa?
Yes. Rugs USA recommends 6 to 8 inches past each arm; Wayfair says at least 6 inches on each side. An 84-inch sofa needs a rug side of at least 96 to 100 inches. A mirror over a vanity works the other way: it should be narrower than the counter below it.
Before you order
Five checks before you buy:
- Painter's tape outline on the floor, checked from the doorway.
- Door swing clears the rug's pile height (Wayfair flags this for entry rugs; it applies to any rug near a door).
- Border of 12 to 18 inches on every side, or a reason it's different.
- Rug pad about 1 inch smaller than the rug on each side.
- Rug edge clear of main walkways, so no one trips on it.
